Tea Time30.5.06
Aristocracy love it. It's called a "cuppa" Down Under. Tea is full of bioflavinoids and antioxidants, this means that after a hard training session a good choice of tea, for example the hugely popular Green Tea variety can do you a whole world of good. Actually, contrary to popular belief, tea as a nutrition health suppliment contains the same amount of caffeine as as a cup of coffee. Though, coffee as a stimulant is usually more potent and therefore is a preferred beverage of choice for some athletes and trainees. Overall, I love tea and I feel it has great variety and is a refreshing alternative to coffee. It also helps eradicate free radicals which is great when you are training intensely.
Fat Loss The Easy Way...Or Not?28.5.06
There is just no easy way to burn fat? Just like any endeavour you undertake, fat loss takes time...Lots of it! Only with some dedicated hard effort in the gym and good nutrition will you ultimately reach your goals. Sounds like some "guru" talk, doesn't it? To tell you the truth along with your dedication to fitness, there are some fantastic ways to burn fat...One costs a lot but is extremely effective, the other doesn't burn a hole in your pocket but again...Is extremely effective. Which way do you go? Well, let's look at both alternatives, you make your mind up...Or not.

HCA (Hyrdoxy Citric Acid), sounds like it will rip a hole in your guts but is found in products like MuscleTech Hydroxycut and has become one of the most popular fat burning products on the market. Earlier products had the combination of caffeine and ephedrine. When combined, these 3 supplements created a powerful fat burning concoction. With the notoriety of drugs like ephedra being banned in bodybuilding circles, products like MuscleTech Hydroxycut went down the au-natural path. How does HCA work? It blocks the activity of the enzyme "ATP citratelyase", this alters the body's fat and glucose metabolism in two ways:

  1. pathway for glycogen production becomes easier than continuing with glucose metabolism into fat
  2. With fat production slowed down, the body begins to store more fat as an energy source. (Source: Anabolic Primer, 1998).
Your other option are the following natural food sources that you can buy at your local supermarket:
  1. Ginger
  2. Onion
  3. chili
So we have the rich man's choice with MuscleTech Hydroxycut, and the "man with the hole in his pocket" choice of ginger, chili and onion. Both are fantastic options, depending on how much money you have to spend. In all instance the natural food choice along with a well balanced diet will help you stay lean and mean all year round and give you the fat burning power you need.
CO Q10 Super Supplement...Nothing New.27.5.06
Co Q10 is a revolutionary supplement, you may have seen it added to many skincare products over the last few years. Funny enough, CO Q10 has been around for a long while. In fact the Japanese have used it to treat degenerative heart disease for quite some time. In Japan you can purchase COQ10 over the pharmacy counter just like aspirin. But why is CO Q10 such a prominent dietary supplement today? What can you gain from it?

Embleton P. (1998) states that "Without CO Q10 you would not have enough energy in to do even a few reps of a given exercise. Further, when CO Q10 levels decline most of the body's major organs are left in a state of energy deprival". CO Q10 is stored in the mitochondrial membrane of muscle. Mitochondria are the power stores that generate endless supplies of energy to our bodies...they do it for their whole lives! Apart from creating energy CO Q10 can help with the following:

  • Increase the body's immune system.
  • Helps lower the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CO Q10 is most prominently found in the heart).
  • Looking for a young healthy appearance well into old age? CO Q10 reduces free radical activity which helps prevent aging!
Co Q10 is a great way of upping the ante in your training regime, increase your energy levels and boost your immunity to disease. Vitacost currently has 75% off all NSI CO Q10 formulations. Click here to claim your CO Q10 discount.
Keys To Training For Bigger Muscle Gains25.5.06
Scrawny, chicken legs, twiggy. There are many names you may be called when you are what is usually termed in bodybuilding circles as a "hard-gainer". I'm naturally tall and lanky. Over the years I was able to take my stick frame of 70 kg at the age of 17, to roughly 98 kg of muscle by the age of 25. The key? Hard, heavy training! In scientific terms "hard-gainers" are usually classified as Ectomorphic, or small boned. To create rippling tides of muscle as an ectomorph requires some of the following training tips:
  • Keep your workouts short and intense.
  • Hard & heavy training is the order of the day.
  • Use basic (what is classified as "compound") movements and exercises (e.g. Squat).
  • Get plenty of sleep and rest between workouts.
  • Aim for balance in your diet, including proper nutrition health suppliments.
  • Don't waste time utilizing training regimes of pro bodybuilding heavyweights, it serves no purpose, always keep it simple. (Source: Steiner, B.J. 1999)
Remember, bodybuilding takes time and a concentrated effort on fundamentals , whether you are a hard-gainer or not. Follow the above guidelines and watch yourself grow! 5 Power Foods For Winter Chills?
Got the winter chills? I'm feeling the effects of the cold this past week, and this means that my time training has also been effected. Today I decided to pack in the Vitamin C with a healthy smoothie. This particular mix had a mixture of blackberries, blueberries, strawberry, with some guarana mixed in for some added energy. The berries that were added are packed with antioxidants. By now the internet is packed with information into the benefits of antioxidants. "Most antioxidants have the ability to share electrons with free radicals in the body. Donation or sharing of an electron stabilizes the free radicals and renders it inactive and incapable of cellular destruction" (Richmond, W. FIA, 2001).

So what are some fantastic foods to fight the winter blues. Here is a list of power packed, antioxidant super foods:

  1. Broccoli - Packed with Vitamin C, listen to your mum when she tells you to eat them!
  2. Sunflower Seeds - Love them for their rich source of protien and their Vitamin E.
  3. Mango - Beta Carotene filled and an excellent addition in a smoothie.
  4. Strawberries - Strawberries are excellent sources for Vitamin C and taste great too.
  5. Almonds - Full of Vitamin E, and popular in many skin care products.
So there you have it. When you feel the winter chills getting the better of you, try the above foods to get you back on track to better health.
Poppin Vitamins? Are They Necessary?21.5.06
Vitamins are everywhere...From your dusty cupboard shelf, to your supermarket isle, to the dank old Fitness First gym bag you use every other day. Believe it, Vitamins are a massive industry with Americans alone spending around $20 billion annually on nutrition health suppliments and high protien foods. Are they necessary? Like any nutrition health suppliment we must try to consume vitamins only when our dietary intake is inadequate. Embleton P. (1998) states that in key research "In virtually all cases the researchers concluded that no single vitamin or combination of vitamins have any effect on performance". Even though marketing hype will tell you otherwise, listen to some advice from personal experience.

When training, nothing...And I mean nothing, replaces good nutritionally balanced diets. Richmond, W. (
Nutrition & Weight Management, FIA, 2001) further cites that "The performance indicators measured in research tests vary widely and often include muscular strength, time to exhaustion, VO2 Max and submaximal tests. As a result there seems no significant increase in performance indicated with increasing vitamin intakes above recommended daily allowances." So, with that said, what is important to understand is that vitamins are necessary as a health nutrition suppliment when the dietary intake of an individual is inadequate, or when regular consistent training entails that vitamins are necessary along with a well balanced diet.

High Powered Coffee For Health
Nothing beats it in the morning! Millions of people testify by its black liquidy goodness. Coffee, Kava...Whatever you want to call it, can be addictively good for reducing cardiovascular disease. A very recent study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (May, 2006) suggested many studies into Norwegians and women in Iowa that showed coffee as the single most important source of antioxidants in these peoples diets. Coffee, as suggested by the study helps reduce inflammation in cardiovascular conditions and other inflammatory diseases. For the people aiming to get fit, coffee has become a staple of their diet regime. Embleton P. Anabolic Primer, 1998 (et al.) suggests coffee has become popular as a dietary aid because it "...Speeds up the rate in which the resting body burns energy". No matter what, remember that coffee is a stimulant, and should be drunk in moderation.

Diet Balance For Maximum Fitness19.5.06
Diets come and go like the wind. Atkins, South Beach, Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers...Can you remember any of them? Great marketing leads...Or often misleads people into the false sense of security that only one diet will suffice. Balance is the key to a good healthy diet. Lately, I have been working hard to try and shed weight and get back into competitive sports. The last couple of weeks, although I have slipped on occasions, (who's perfect right? There is nothing wrong with a cheat day here and there) my diet has begun to resemble somewhat of the Mediterranean variety, plenty of fish, salads in olive oil, not so much fruits (which is a staple of this kind of diet...I know I'm bad) etc... My diet, is going to be different to the next man or women, because I have different needs and different goals. Overall, the main thing that one should remember when seeking out a diet that is right for them, is that the diet suits their goals, makes them feel good and fuels their energy requirements for the day, and for play. We must also note that a good balanced diet should appeal to a persons lifestyle.

I'm Running!15.5.06
Like a New York pedestrian trying to dodge a line of crazy shoppers at a Macy's sale. I'm running again, this time seriously. Many of my readers from my Keeper Skool blog know that I have just recovered from ACL surgery, and through many months of excrutiating rehabilitation I am finally in a position to start running seriously which is fantastic. Liz and I took a serious investment to our health the other week and bought our very first treadmill! Over the past week I have been waking up nice and early and have begun my running program back to the levels of fitness I enjoyed last year. Following is my program and what I want to achieve over the following 4 weeks:

  • Start Slow: This week has seen my focus around trying to lose some fat. There is just no better way to achieve fat loss than running at about 60% of your maximum heart rate. Therefore, I focused on running between 7-9 km/h with daily increasing increments in time spent running.
  • Air & Fat: Fat just does not like that nasty O2. Actually the reason for me running slow is the fact that running at sub maximal intensities can help you burn fat, when you run anaerobically (without the presence of oxygen) it has a differing effect on your metabolism.
  • Setting Goals: Over the next 4 weeks my goal is to work up my running time so that I can reach over an hour in the morning, I'm already up to 18 or so minutes in my first week.
I've blogged about running on many occasions and a great resource for anyone trying to get fit is none other than the running "blogfather" Mark. Check out A Passion For Running for some great information about running methods and tips here.
